Come on you're still buying fast fashion? That is so out of trend. Time to move on and finally make more conscious fashion choices by supporting ethically and sustainably responsible labels. Don't know where to start? I will introduce you to three of my favourite slow fashion brands.

  1. Patagonia

Yes, you guessed it, Patagonia is one of the slow fashion brands you should definitely support. The US based company makes sure its production is ethical and sustainable. They claim to be in business to save our home planet. The brand is extremely transparent about their practices and which steps we should take as a collective in order to fight against the climate crisis we find ourselves in. Patagonia does not only change the way they produce their garments but also support communities that make efforts in going fossil fuel free and protect the Earth. As Patagonia’s CEO Ryan Gellert says: ‘The climate crisis poses an existential threat; if we don’t clean up our mess, we’ll be history. Business has a role to play, but it’s only one lever. We must use all the tools at our disposal to secure a safer, more just future.’. His statement highlights the urgency of the problem and in a way calls every business to take action. The US based label has developed a guarantee on each of their products to make sure that they are as durable as possible which leads to a reduction in water and energy consumption as well as waste production. They implement full transparency about how and by whom the clothes are made in order to keep themselves accountable for every step. Furthermore, an upcycling plan has been put into place and a program has been developed that ties them to giving back part of their revenue to the planet. So all in all, with every consumer growing more conscious and critical with their fashion choices, this brand should be on top of your list. Below I have added a few pictures of my personal favourite items of Patagonia.

2. back beat co.

The second brand I would like to introduce you to, is also based in the US and is called ‘back beat co.’ It is a label that has been created in LA and shows influences of the typical modern Californian look with fun jumpsuits and tee’s. Some of their designs are linked to the popular skate and surf culture of California and that is what makes the brand so attractive to many. On top of that, they care about the planet, which is the coolest thing a brand can do. Their priority lies with the people and the planet before profit is taken into consideration. Ethical and social responsibility plays a core role within their business and they apply it in every step of their creation to their production to the selling of their pieces. Environmentally friendly primary fabrics are used such as hemp which is one of the least harmful raw materials to the planet and has been an upcoming fabric choice especially for socially and environmentally responsible labels. Through their business practices, back beat co. hopes to inspire people to make more conscious and thoughtful decisions when it comes to the purchase of new items. The label encourages its clients or individuals in general to choose a low impact and carefully put together garment instead of a fast fashion one. I have again selected my three favourite pieces to give you a look and feel of the brand and hopefully make you curious to have a look yourself. No honey sustainable and socially responsible fashion does not have to be boring and unfashionable.

3. ensemble amsterdam

The next brand is ‘ensemble amsterdam’, it is a small Amsterdam based brand that focuses on slow fashion along with a social focus. The label mainly produces street style inspired clothing. Their goal whilst founding the brand was to produce durable garments that would be accessible to everyone and comfortable as well as fashionable. Alongside their men’s and women’s collection, they have decided to also blur gender limits and develop an unisex collection. With their motto ‘look good, do good, feel good.’, the brand makes sure their main mission and vision is shining through. The design of their pieces was made to be timeless, comfortable and inclusive. It should also define a certain urban look and feel, inspired by the city it was created in: the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam. By purchasing an item of the brand, you do something good because for every purchase, they have made the promise to plant a tree in order to give something back to the Earth.
